special wines

Stocco’s “Special wines” line was born in 1999 as a challenge to demonstrate that also plain wines can be great wines. Today it represents the best of our production.

The “Special wines” project was born in 1999 from the idea to convert wine into a message. We wanted to prove that also flat land can create wines that have character, structure and are apt to aging.

Since the beginning, “Special wines” sounded as the most appropriate name not only because of the different way of vinification – wines aging is made in wood barrel – but also because we knew they would be destined to have a special place in our hearts. And so it is.

The first label came out in 2000; it was Roos dai Lens, our Merlot aged over 13 months in French oak barriques. The result was encouraging and made us understand that we were on the right way, and today it represents our banner among red wines. In this wine the variety’s principal characteristics, such as an aroma of red berries, blend with notes of spice and balsam wood.

The following year it was the time of our Picolit Passito Lusint, so called because of its brightness. Made from selected and partially dried grapes, this wine has a great concentration and personality, with hints of a multitude of aromas, including honey, caramel and candied fruit.

10 years passed before a new member joined the “Specials” family. It was 2011 when Andrea Stocco’s desire of experimentation gave birth to Sericus, a wine holding the story of the territory it expresses. Blend of three varieties – Friulano, Chardonnay and Malvasia Istriana, this one aged in acacia tonneau – that have always been cultivated in the heart of Friuli where once silkworms were raised, this wine expresses complex notes of apricot and almond, laced with balsamic and spicy notes.

In 2015 it was Botis’ turn, a wine made from the best and carefully selected Ribolla Gialla grapes. Versatile and flexible variety (we also vinify it in inox tanks and with long Charmat method), in the big barrel (fine grain oak) version it shows its deepest side: its elegant floral and spicy notes recalling acacia blossoms and wild flowers, melt to butter and vanilla hints.

Doghis represents our last challenge: made of the best Friulano grapes, this wine ages for 10 moths in big oak barrels, giving it great softness and persistence. Notes of thyme, chamomile and almond meet with spicy and dried fruits hints into an elegant and wide bouquet.
